A few years ago, we had a cat named Sophie that had diabetes. She was diagnosed when she was a year old. She had complications of low blood sugar, Pancreatitis, Hypokalemia, Hepatic Lipidosis and infections. Over Sophie’s life time, we spent approximately $10,000 trying to manage her disease. We had another pet named Carly that had a neurological problem where she was fine one day and then overnight she could hardly walk and after a few days she could not make it to her litter box because her back end was so weak. They did a lot of testing and never did figure out what caused her problem. She kept getting worse so we had to make the devastating decision to euthanize her. Her bills were approximately $7,000. We had pet insurance on Carly. We only had to pay $1600 for her care. The pet insurance company paid for euthanasia as well. For us pet insurance is a must. We have pet insurance on our current pet. Thankfully we have not had to use it yet.

In 2016 there were 89.6 million dogs and 94.2 million cats living in American households. The average amount spent on all the pets including food, supplies, vet care, medicine, grooming and boarding was 66.8 billion dollars.

Our pets are part of our family and we want to give them the best care we can. Unfortunately some people have to make the heartbreaking decision to euthaniz their pet due to financial reasons. Having pet insurance helps to eliminate this decision for a lot of people. I don’t ever want to make a decision on my pet’s health due to my finances. For us, pet insurance is a must.

Unfortunately pet insurance does not cover pre existing conditions. When we adopted our current pet, we purchased pet insurance as soon as we brought her home. The pet insurance company that we went with had a 15 day waiting period before they would cover her vet expenses. Unfortunately she had Giardia from being in a foster home. We had to pay for the vet visits and meds because we were in the 15 day waiting period. However, now we have the peace of mind that we can cover future veterinary expenses for her. All the pet insurance companies have deductibles and different percentages of the bill that they will cover. You will also have to decide what the maximum amount per year that you want the insurance company to cover. What amounts you decide on will determine your premium.
